How to Talk Dirty: A Practical Guide for Adults, With Examples
Good dirty talk is often quiet. Start with a sentence you'd actually say, learn the few types of line that work, and let your partner's reactions guide the rest.
Why dirty talk feels awkward at first
Dirty talk is saying out loud what you want, what you feel, or what you're about to do, during sex or in the hours before it. Most people find it awkward the first few times. That isn't a sign you're bad at it. It's a sign you're hearing your own voice say things you usually keep in your head.
The other thing that gets in the way is the idea that dirty talk has to sound like porn: loud, graphic, and constant. So people borrow a line they would never say, it comes out flat, and they decide it isn't for them. It was the line that didn't fit.
Good dirty talk is often quiet. “I've been thinking about this all day” counts. So does a single “don't stop.” What makes a line work is that it's true, and that it's said to this person, right now.
Start smaller than you think
You don't need a script. You need one sentence you'd be comfortable saying, and then another one next time. A rough order that works for a lot of people:
- Sound before words. Breathing, a yes, letting yourself be heard at all. Plenty of people stay silent out of habit.
- Their name. Said slowly, it does more than most lines.
- What you like, as it happens. “That. Right there.” You're reporting, not performing.
- What you want next. “Slower.” “Come here.” Short requests are easy to say and easy to follow.
- What you've been thinking about. “I couldn't stop thinking about last night.” This is where it starts to feel like dirty talk.
Talk about it outside the bedroom first, when nobody is on the spot. “Is there anything you'd like me to say more?” is a fine way to open. Some people find typing easier than speaking, so a message during the day can be the warm-up for the evening. If you do that, keep it to devices only you use.
What to actually say: examples by type
Most dirty talk falls into a handful of types. You don't need all of them. Find the one or two that sound like you and lean on those.
Tell them what you notice
“You look so good like this.” “I love how you sound right now.” Noticing is the easiest place to begin because it's about them, not about you finding the right words for yourself.
Tell them what you want
“I want you closer.” “Don't rush.” “Keep doing that.” Plain requests are useful as well as sexy. Your partner learns what works without having to guess.
Ask questions
“Do you like that?” “Tell me what you want.” Questions hand the conversation over, which takes the pressure off you. They also work as check-ins, said in the same voice as everything else.
Build anticipation
Say what's going to happen before it happens. “Tonight I'm taking my time with you.” Anticipation is where a lot of the charge lives, and it works by message long before you're in the same room.
Praise
“You're doing so well.” For some people specific, sincere praise is the most intense thing you can say. Our guide to praise kink explains why, and what separates good praise from filler.
Use their words, not yours. If your partner has a word for something, use it. If they wince at one, drop it.
Vocabulary is the part people worry about most. Some couples like plain, frank words. Some find those clinical or crude and prefer softer ones. Neither is more correct. Pay attention to the words your partner uses, and ask if you're unsure.
Putting it together: one evening
Here's how the types can stack up across a single evening, without a single line you'd need to rehearse:
- Mid-afternoon, by message: “Can't concentrate. Keep thinking about you.” That's anticipation, and it costs nothing.
- When you see them: nothing explicit. A look, and “I meant that, by the way.”
- Once things start: noticing. “You smell so good.”
- As it builds: requests and questions. “Slower. Like that. Do you like it when I…?”
- Afterwards: praise, or just the truth. “That was exactly what I wanted.”
None of those is graphic. Together they make your partner feel wanted all day, which is most of what dirty talk is for. Once you're comfortable, you can turn the explicitness up as far as you both like.
Read your partner, not a script
The best dirty talk responds to what's happening. A line that landed last week can fall flat tonight, and that's fine. Watch how they react and adjust: if they go quiet in a good way, keep going; if they laugh, laugh with them. Laughing during sex is not a failure. It usually means you're both relaxed.
- Lower and slower usually beats louder. You're close enough to be heard.
- Degrading names, insults, or rough talk belong to things you've agreed in advance. If you're curious about that side, start with how negotiation and safe words work.
- Leave out exes, comparisons, and anything about their body they're self-conscious about, unless they've asked for it.
- “Still good?” can be said in the same low voice. A check-in doesn't have to break the mood.
Afterwards, ask what they liked. “What should I say more of?” is a better question than “was that weird?”, and the answer gives you your next line.
When a line doesn't land
It will happen. You'll say something that sounded good in your head and hear it come out wrong, or your partner will go still in a way that isn't the good kind. Don't apologise at length and don't push on. Drop it, go back to something simple (their name works), and mention it later if it seems to matter. One misfire doesn't make you bad at this. Couples who talk easily in bed got there by saying a lot of slightly wrong things to each other first.
Practising in private, including with AI
Some people want to rehearse before they try anything with a partner, and there's nothing odd about that. A few low-pressure ways to find your words:
- Write a few lines in a notes app and read them back. You'll hear quickly which ones sound like you.
- Read erotic stories and notice which dialogue you like. Fiction is a good phrasebook.
- Chat with an AI companion. Nobody is judging, you can try a line and see how it reads, and you can start again as often as you like.
On EroticSaga you can chat privately with AI girlfriends or AI boyfriends. Every character is a fictional adult, and explicit chat is allowed at whatever pace you set. Verifying your email gets you three free replies. The Unlimited and VIP plans add daily chat and voice calls, which is the closest thing to saying the words out loud without another person in the room. If you'd rather try it in writing first, AI sex chat works the same way.
AI practice has a limit, and it's worth being honest about it. It helps you find words. It can't teach you to read a real person who hesitates, laughs, or wants something different from the script. Use it to get comfortable, then pay attention to your partner. Before you share anything personal with any app, run through our privacy checklist.
